Editors Review

Pros

  • no annual fee, however, if you are not eligible with a family connection or employment, you can count a $10-$15 donation required to join as an annual fee

Cons

  • $500 minimum deposit
  • you need to donate to one of partner charities (Reach Out to Schools seems to be the cheapest $10 option) if you are not eligible via employment or family connections

Verdict

One of the best secured options around.

There is a little bit of a hassle to apply if you are not automatically eligible, but a small charity donation will help to sort it out.  Otherwise, the card is the best - low 12% APR, no annual fee and grace period - it is all you need with a secured card. And yes, it reports to major credit bureaus, so your credit score will improve if you use it wisely.
