Editors Review

Pros

  • Highest rewards for groceries and gas:
  • 6% cash back on groceries up to $6000 in spending annually
  • 3% on gas purchases
  • 1% on all purchases
  • 0% intro APR on purchases and balance transfers for 12 months

Cons

  • $95 annual fee
  • AmEx credit cards are not accepted everywhere – especially outside the U.S.
  • 2.7% international transaction fee

Verdict

One of the best cards for groceries and gas rewards. Not for people who carry a balance because of the interest rates (13.49% minimum, there are better low APR cards on the market).

For groceries cash back, there is a cap of $6000 on annual spending. If you spend much more, you can consider  U.S. Bank Cash+ card with a 5% cash back and $8,000 annual cap and 2% unlimited cash back on one category of choice.

hit my credit score unexpectedly

Connor, 02/19/15

Without any warning (not a call, just a mail which I never got) AmEx reduced my credit limit by $8,000. That made me to over-utilize the limit and my credit score took a huge hit. Good job, AmEx.

Approved for a normal limit finally

Curtz, 02/09/15

I was looking for a higher limit card, tired of my current Capital One card smallish limit. Surprisingly got a $5,000 approved. Well done American Express!

Will see, just got approved

Got approval for a $3500 instantly! I’m excited, because I was worried with my credit balancing on the limit of the required. Will see how it will handle my everyday expenses.

Love AmEx

Sanny, 01/09/15

I’ve been an Amex customer at good old Golden days of American Express. It had an amazing customer experience and I enjoyed the best concierge service on the World with my charge card. However, I find this new line of Everyday cards a good value as well – no one other card can offer you 6% back on groceries (and I know I’m not the only one who spends most on groceries). And I find it more convenient to use a revolving card, not an old style charge card.
