Pros

• 1 point per dollar spent
• looks good in your wallet
• valuable rewards points - up to 1.8 cents value each

Cons

• does not improve your score the same way as regular revolving credit cards do
• this is a charge card - full balance need to be paid off every month, cannot carry a balance

Verdict

You can consider this card as an evergreen classic, but some can say it is just old. Disappointing rewards rate of 1% flat, high annual fee. If you feel like you need a classic AmEx in your wallet it is maybe a good option to look at the Gold version of the card; it offers 3-3-1 points per dollar on different categories and charges a slightly higher annual fee.

For those who are not committed to classic style, you can have a look at the newer line of credit cards by Amex - EveryDay and BlueCash that offer similar rewards rates in a more useful revolving card format.
