Editors Review

Pros

  • $100 annual Airline incidental expense credit
  • Complimentary hotel room upgrades with Luxury Hotel Program
  • 10-50% banking relationship bonus on your rewards (from 10% for a Checking account with Wells Fargo to 50% if you have Private banking package)

Cons

  • $175 annual fee, waived for the first year

Verdict

The card is created to compete with Chase, Barclaycard and other major banks with a strong offering in the travel segment.
First, the card offers a good rewards program - 3x on any airline purchases, 2x on any hotel; it is what you expect from a good travel card.
Second, if you have existing relations with Wells Fargo, for example maintain a savings account or use private banking services, you get a boost of 10-50% to your rewards on a card. Then you look at the $175 annual fee and it looks like a lot. In fact, you can offset the fee by using a $100 annual airline incidental charges credit (if you pay for baggage, on board meals, etc.).
The card can be recommended to people who have other relations with Wells Fargo and of course people who travel - in that circumstance, the $175 annual fee could make sense.
